Night & Limited Visibility
The reef changes completely after sunset. Octopus hunt, lobster march, corals feed, and your dive light turns the ordinary into something extraordinary. The SSI Night & Limited Visibility specialty teaches you to dive confidently in the dark and in low-viz conditions — light handling, navigation, buddy communication, and staying calm and oriented.
Where you’ll dive
Blue Heron Bridge, Riviera Beach. One of the most famous shore dives on the planet for a reason — a shallow, protected marine sanctuary that comes alive at night with seahorses, octopus, frogfish, and juvenile everything. It’s the perfect place for a first night dive and for macro-lovers.
Central Florida springs — Devil’s Den. This prehistoric underground spring near Williston stays calm, clear, and about 72°F year-round, and the dim light inside its domed cavern makes it an ideal, controlled place to sharpen your dive-light handling and limited-visibility skills before you head to the coast.
What you’ll learn
Dive-light and backup-light handling; underwater communication with lights; navigation and orientation in the dark; managing limited visibility; and night entry/exit procedures.
Prerequisites
SSI Open Water Diver (or equivalent). A night dive made during your SSI Advanced Open Water course can be credited toward this specialty.
