SSI Specialty Course
Perfect Buoyancy
Buoyancy is the single skill that makes every other part of diving easier. The SSI Perfect Buoyancy specialty transforms how you move underwater — hovering motionless, gliding with less effort, using less air, and never touching or stirring up the reef or bottom. It’s the fastest way to look and feel like a seasoned diver.
Where you’ll dive
We teach buoyancy in Florida’s clearest, calmest water, where you can see every adjustment. Alexander Springs — shallow, warm, and forgiving, with a sandy bottom and the closest spring diving to Orlando. De Leon Springs — a calm, clear spring near DeLand with a gentle ~30-foot basin and little current, so there’s plenty of open water to fine-tune your weighting, trim, and hovering.
What you’ll learn
Precise weighting and trim; hovering in any position; controlled ascents and descents; streamlining to reduce drag and air consumption; and finning techniques that protect fragile environments.
Prerequisites
SSI Open Water Diver (or equivalent). A foundation for every other specialty — and a buoyancy dive from your SSI Advanced Open Water course can be credited toward it.
